## History

The building at 17 Barrow Street is one of the oldest structures still in commercial use in Manhattan, and its history is a genuine draw for guests, not decoration.

- Built in 1767 as a carriage house with an accompanying barn.
- In the 1790s, Aaron Burr — then Attorney General of the State of New York, later Vice President of the United States — kept his coach and horses here. He lost the property after killing Alexander Hamilton in the 1804 Weehawken duel.
- A stone-lined, barrel-vaulted tunnel runs from the building toward Hudson Street, the former shoreline. It was almost certainly used by the Underground Railroad as a stop for people escaping slavery en route to Canada.
